Practicing prefixes and suffixes is simple! First have your child watch the above video! The video is a great motivator! The catchy and upbeat tune will stick in your child's mind as they practice how to apply prefixes and suffixes into their reading. After the video practice the chart below with your child. Discussing the differences between prefixes that are added to the beginning of the word and suffixes that are added to the end of the word. Your child should have a stack of index cards that we created in class with the prefixes and suffixes on them. Shuffle all the cards and turn them face down in one pile. As the dealer, it's your job to flip over the top card and lay it face up. The first player who can shout out a word that uses the prefix or suffix correctly, and can provide the definition of the prefix or suffix, gets to keep that card for their pile. You may want to keep a dictionary handy, just in case some funny words come tumbling out. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins! If your child has left his or her cards at school refer to the chart below. Please contact me and I would be happy to provide an extra supply of cards to keep at home!
